Publishing Guidelines
First off, a few general observations: Headline Books has accounts established with world wide book distributors including Ingram Book Distributors, Baker & Taylor Books, Follett Library, The News Group, Hudson News and others. We also have accounts with national chain book stores including Borders, Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, etc.
We have produced titles in several different genres (politics, art, current and historical events, spirituality, etc.), so the only restrictions are: 1) must not be X-rated, and 2) must be your work. We are particularly interested in acquiring authors interested in doing workshops, speaking engagements, and school visits. We currently have 67 active authors who travel and over 125 titles.
Headline Books also publishes fiction www.publisherpage.com and we have a children's book division, Headline Kids, www.headlinekids.com.
Most authors consider their work of national importance. Oft times, however, the book may lack the universality necessary for national exposure, and is best served to a regional audience where readers share a similar life-style, environment, etc. Moreover, many books are launched regionally and, as sales dictate, may climb to national exposure. This is more a consideration for marketing than it is for damage to an author's ego! If your book has the potential for national appeal, we will be the first to tell you and to offer a contract!
But Headline Books is just as apt to offer a contract for a book it believes will sell well to a regional audience.
Finally, Headline Books will read any submission you deem worthy. We do ask that you query us before sending a manuscript. We have twenty-six years of publishing experience and 73 national awards for our titles. We are proud to continue to be accessible to aspiring and established writers alike.
And now for specific guidelines:
Please Query Before Sending Manuscript. Email: query@HeadlineBooks.com
Headline Books is now accepting Audio Submissions!
Audio Guidelines: CD with one page synopsis and short pitch. Include target market and marketing ideas and why your book would be good for Headline Books, Inc. plus first three chapters of manuscript read by the author. Include contact information and if we like what we hear we will contact you to submit entire manuscript via post office.
1. All submissions must include a return envelope with postage affixed (S.A.S.E.) if you want your manuscript returned. Please include your email address.
2. Do not send an entire book. Typically, a submission should include a one page cover letter (presenting your background, your reason for writing the book, the audience you envision, etc.), a synopsis and the first three chapters. All submissions must be via United States Post Office, no email submissions, please. Also See Audio Submission guidelines above.
3. Please be patient. It takes us a while (maybe several weeks, sometimes several months) to read all that is coming in. We promise, however, that your manuscript will get a fair hearing. If it's rejected, we'll give you an idea as to why it was rejected. (Most likely, the reason will be that we don't see a large enough market for it.)
4. We will consider manuscripts submitted either by individuals or by agents. The S.A.S.E. is essential either way; else we will not return materials.
That's it. We wish you the best in your writing endeavors!
